James A. Joven

On March 7, 2006, James A. Joven was sworn in as Judge of the Marion County Small Claims Court, Lawrence Township Division. He serves the Court on a part-time basis and also maintains a private law practice with the Indianapolis law firm John, Lewis And Wilkins, LLP.

Born and raised in Indianapolis, Judge Joven graduated from Scecina Memorial High School, Wabash College, and the Indiana University School of Law - Bloomington. He was admitted to practice law in 1992. Judge Joven also attended the Indiana Leadership Forum (Class of 2003) and the Lacy Leadership Institute LEAD Program (Class of 2007). In 2006, Judge Joven was the winner of the Junior Achievement/KPMG Indy's Best & Brightest Award in the Government Division. As a youth, Judge Joven earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was awarded the Walter J. Schuchmann Scout Leadership Award by the Veterans Day Council of Indianapolis.

Judge Joven has spent much of his legal career in public service. Before returning to private practice, he served as the Indiana Securities Commissioner under Secretary of State Todd Rokita. Prior to that, as a Deputy Attorney General for Attorney General Steve Carter, Judge Joven was the coordinating attorney on the team that defended challenges to the Indiana Telephone Privacy Act - the law that created Indiana's "Do Not Call" list. He also worked in the administration of former Indianapolis Mayor Steve Goldsmith, heading an initiative to find ways to reuse environmentally contaminated real estate. Judge Joven's first legal experience was serving as a Judicial Law Clerk for Justice Roger O. DeBruler of the Indiana Supreme Court.

Judge Joven is a member of St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church, sits on the Board of Directors of Scecina Memorial High School, and serves on the Executive Committee of the Indiana Council for Economic Education. Judge Joven is married to Carol Nemeth Joven, who is also an attorney. Judge and Mrs. Joven and their three children reside in Kensington Farms in Lawrence.



Brian N. Bulger , the Lawrence Township Constable, is serving his first full term in that position.
